Despite all their fights, despite not agreeing with each other sometimes, they always understand each other. It’s something they always had: understanding. From the beginning Elena understood Damon better than anyone else. She saw behind the façade. She got that he loved Katherine, too. She realized that he was moved by love. And she always knew that every stupid move he made was briven by the pain he felt. Because she always knew that he felt and cared. And the reason she understands him, it’s because in a way she’s the same. She’s like him when it comes to the people she loves. She overprotects them and she’s willing to do anything for them. Same goes for Damon. He completely understood that she was afraid for Stefan and wanted to save him. He knew she didn’t want Stefan to drink human blood again because of the effect it has on him but at the same time she was afraid because Stefan was weak without human blood in his sistem, so Damon encouraged her to do what she deep down knew she had to do. He got that giving her the necklace was a way to give her hope because that’s what she needed. He knew that she was hiding her pain trying to be strong and almost pretending she didn’t care (because he does the same), and she knew he was worried about her. Even when they’re mad for something they have done, they know where that action comes from. Either is pain or protection or pressure or wanting to be hated. They just understand each other. It has always been this way.
